Okay everyone, I wanted to give an update on what I have figured out for this workflow so far:
1) There are a ton of ways to do this…currently our MEP consultant for Energy Analysis using the eQuest program.
a. The only way I have found to get a model from Revit into eQuest is to export a gbXML file from Revit, take that into Autodesk Green Building Studio, and then export a Doe2 file from Green Building Studio that can then be imported into eQuest. Doing this, however, causes limited functionality in eQuest, as you lose the ability to use the built in wizards, i.e., everything has to be set manually without the wizards, as far as I gathered.
2) Ecotect seems to have a promising feature, and does a lot of good stuff, but I have heard that it may lack some in the area of Energy Analysis/Simulation, as it pertains to the LEED credit.
3) IES Virtual Environment seems very promises, but it’s expensive. Also, it is my understanding that IES cannot export it’s data out to any other useable file types for use in, say, eQuest or Ecotect, therefore, to establish a valid workflow with our consultants, we would need them to buy into the software (however, they did say there might be a chance to be able to export to gbXML in version 6.1 which is supposed to hit the streets soon). It is, however, very robust, and is about to come out with what they are calling a PRM Navigator for the LEED EA 8.1 credit, using the VE-GAIA framework. It also has plugins for Revit that allow you to do early analysis without leaving Revit, which is really nice.
The majority of my specific program research has been with IES Virtual Environment, and here are few other things that I found out.
1) The PRM Navigator for VE-GAIA software will come with (this is my understanding) the baseline defaults based on ASHRAE 90.1-2007.
2) The program may have the capability to be multi-threaded, in that it could run multiple simulations at the same time (all your orientations (N,S,E,W) for example).
I may post more related to this soon, when I have figured out some more stuff. I’d love to hear anybody else’s thoughts on this!
