Revit 2011 First Impressions?

Okay, so now that Revit 2011 has been out for a few weeks, what are your first impressions?

I think the user interface is much better...less moving around of all the tools on the Ribbon.

I love the new docked instanced properties pallete.  I have been able to move my Project Browser and my Instance Properties Box to my second screen, and it's really nice.

Some of the new tools, like the ability to activate a move or copy command before selecting the object is really nice too, and I have been able to utilize the Select all instances in view tool as well, which is really a great addition to our Revit toolset.

I have messed around with the new Sun Diagram/Position, and that's really a neat tool for visualizing Solar Path and shadows.

I still think the New Realistic Visual Style is a bit slow, but the Ambient Occlusion setting in Revit is really sweet looking.  Has anyone messed with this?

I haven't gotten to mess with Adaptive components yet, but they look very promising.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the new features in Revit 2011!

Well, another thing I am really impressed with is the speed enhancements on opening files and reloading linked files...since it is multithreaded (a portion of it at least), I have noticed substantial performance increases when opening files, particularly some of my large files.  I think in my case, file open speeds are probably 25-35 percent faster with Revit 2011 than they were with Revit 2010!

I was just given a copy of Revit Structure 2011; I am a design/build contractor of low and zero-energy homes and a friend suggested I should use something a little more sophisticated than the "PUNCH PRO" software I have been using to get ideas onto (electronic) paper.

I have to say this program is a whole new animal; reminds me of getting the manual for Cakewalk v1 in my RIM class in college.  It was the size of the NY city yellow pages.  Is there somewhere I can get some basic tutorials so I can begin to use this program?

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I know of a few places that you could go and pay for the tutorials, but I got the idea you were looking for something free.  First of all, by all means, any questions you have along the way, please feel free to post here.  I am usually pretty good about answering questions very quickly after they are posted.

1)  Your best bet is to probably use the tutorials that come with the program.  I would try downloading and using these revit tutorials from Autodesk.

2)  Do you use outlook?  If so, the second thing I would do is download the RSS feed file I posted here.  Basically, I found some pretty good Revit blogs that many times have some good information, tips, tutorials, etc. that might be helpful to you.  Instructions on how to import the RSS feed file into Outlook are linked in the post.

I hope this will help get you started.  Revit is an incredible tool.  On subscription, there is now even a conceptual design energy analysis tool, which might apply to your line of work.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the reply and the links.  Right now I am just looking for the basics to get started; who knows in the future though I may want to go more in depth and take a class or something, but for now the links you sent will get me going in the right direction.

I am currently working on the design of a small cluster of homes in Tampa, FL; these homes will share resources such as a community chiller system to provide hot water and cooling for all of the buildings and a constructed wetlands that will be utilized to recycle greywater and grow vegetables.  The chiller will utilize a parabolic trough reflector and evacuated tube solar thermal collector system.  Are these items that can be modeled in Revit?  I hope to be able to duplicate this setup time and again and it would be nice to be able to model these things (among others) in future designs.

Thanks again for your help!  I look forward to soon being able to do more than just draw boxes in Revit!

 Sounds Fun...a few more links:

Autodesk Seek - Here you can find a lot of manufacturer specific content.  You need to look for .rfa files which are Revit Family files.  If you can't find what you need, you can build your own families in Revit.  Just read up on how to do that.  To start, you don't have to make them parametric (resizeable).

Revit City - Here you can find a lot of user created families that have been posted.  Some are good, and some are not, but you may be able to find something close to what you need here as well.

Also, something to consider...as a constructor, you may have the need for Revit MEP.  It's going to have a lot of the systems capabilities and calculation abilities you might need.
