young revit student in need of help

The super user asks for comments / input.

I have a requirement for my parents.

My parents have land in a country town in western australia called beverley.  We travelled to a builder, who informed us of the price for a modest house, and then suddenly doubled the price, when we asked for a small verandah to be built.  Price doubling in the building game is not uncommon, but the base price was $186,000 AUD for the house.

So, I assumed, that my 18 years of commercial computing experience wouldnt be wasted, and I started to research.  The research led to revit, revit led to lynda.com, and lynda.com lead to support sites, because their explanations of site management were pathetic.

I have survey data, that used topo points, without the points file.  Also, I havent managed to do much more than import the survey cad drawing into revit, and make a sun path, and adjust the north relative point.  I moved the location with internet services, but I havent got my head around shared coordinates.

Never mind, being able to make spot coordinates to make sure my gps site is accurate.  On top of all this, as of January 1, 2011 the building code is going to change, and I need to get a design for a house in revit architecture 2011, built and submitted to council - from scratch in one month.

Oh, i should also remark on how "brave" I am, or some could say arrogantly stupid.  I told my mother, that I could deliver a result, that would make her into an owner builder before the building regulations change, to make it even harder to receive a building permit in western australia.  At the moment, the building permits are granted on two factors - the energy rating / efficiency of the home..

And the displacement of walls to boundaries, elevations, and roof pitches, taking into consideration sewerage, and other neighbouring factors.

So, the reason - why I havent been so chatty - about new developments that I can bring to the forum, is the only new development I can add, is the rapid adoption of revit, and understanding architecture, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical phases, along with project management, and building code - in one month.

In this way, I will have studied what takes say, 8-10 years worth of experience in this last month, to bravely produce a result for my parents.  I will be able to share, what things I prioritise to be worth of independent study, after I can produce some result before dec 3  - the cutoff date for the beverly council meeting for december 15.

So, unless you can help educate me with a massive knowledge transfer - I have to study night and day, to save my parent's superannuation from being squandered by a suit, in a building office.  This is my passion, and this is my driving motivation, to get a professional results of planing for my parents.

I need to get this survey, into revit architecture, with enough accuracy, so that I can start to learn while developing the results.

-2.88 the lowest datum point.

the beverley plot location is

-32.1016654968262,116.92163848877

true north is

20° 31' 36" E

Thankyou.

Jayson de Groot.

Hi there, welcome to the Revitinfo Forum and the Revit community!

I am glad to help however I can.  In immediate response to your questions:

1)  You will probably have to trial and error on the CAD import (see 2 below) for the scale.  You can check the units of the topo and make sure you have a reference distance that you can scale the file up or down in Revit by.  Or, just double check the units settings and make sure you double check that when you do the import/link, it is the right scale.

2)  To import the CAD file into Revit, select the insert Tab, and "Link CAD".  If you were going to be able to take a 3D topography generated from the survey, you would have to select "Import CAD."  However, I looked at your survey, and it doesn't have 3D topo lines, so you'll be making the site topo manually, which doesn't look to be hard for your site.

3)  If you do a search on this forum, there are some posts about Site CAD file linking, shared coordinates, etc.

Please let me know if you run into anything specific that you have a question about.  You can post pretty decent sized files on this forum, so feel free to upload your PURGED revit files if you need some specific troubleshooting help.

Good Luck!
