I might also do really custom work for people interested. I would only accept payments via paypal, most likely.
A few things:
1) What types of family needs do you have?
2) Would you be willing to pay $2 to $5 for a quality, custom family?
I encourage your feedback and thoughts! ____________________ | | | |

This could be very useful and at $2-5 very reasonable. The greatest problem I find (as an Arch. drafter) is that you usually need the family there and then, but do not have the time or inclination to build a new family and end making do with what is available on the internet or fudging an existing family.
Our requirements are usually for building elements which the manufacturer provides in AutoCAD format and not in REVIT. Windows, doors, louvres, etc. Thsi also goes for the elements in 2D for detailing. The response I have received from manufacturers is that there is not enough requests from REVIT users and most architectural firms still require AutoCAD. I even offered to draw one door and window manufacturers details for them free of charge and received no response!!
Time is a major factor, but if this can be overcome you could be onto a winner. |

The Manufacturer should be supplying the content in Revit format.
www.productspec.net get the suppliers to fund the building of content that they host. This is the best way as it is the supplier who ultimately benefits from their content being in our models. Perhaps you should pitch your $2-5 scheme to the suppliers, only multiply it by 50 or so.. |

well thats fine....but sometimes I've used CAD as a tool, I used to import cad template and save it on a revit family as a revit template, or sometimes for presentation purposes I used the CAD link command, to link it to my revit works...but the main problem was if you are using CAD link command, revit will not find those items if you are going to check for your interferrrence report.

i mean spooling...i want to set my duct template into its standard or commercial fabrication length.for example we used 1220mm as a standard length on our duct, so my problem if i will draw this on the program using its generic template....the moment i will connect an another 1220mm duct the program will automatically connect it and convert it into a single intity which is 2440mm length of duct. |

All:
Thanks for the feedback. I agree that manufacturers need to be making content, but at the same time, there is some stuff that is needed that is more custom.
For example:
1) architectural millwork families that could work for a variety of circumstances (instead of having a family for every unique condition)
2) custom window families that would work well during the design phase (easily arraying mullions vertically and horizontally to achieve the look you want quickly)
3) custom site families (tree families that work for rendering and color site plans...get rid of photoshop for site plans!)
etc, etc.
I could go on and on about stuff like this. Attached is a screen shot of a site plan that was generated completely with revit. Notice the trees..this family helps make the site plan look very architectural. These same trees have been set up to be rendered using RPC families as well, so its all in one. _______________
