sheets in a revit multidiscipline project

Hi everyone,

First of all my apologies for my poor English, I will try my best.

Today at my company we have started a discussion about how to manage the sheets in a Revit multidiscipline project. If one peculiarity in BIM is to have all the project integrated, what happen when we work with several disciplines?, We can link the architectural model in MEP and vice versa but is it reasonably to have all the sheets in one of these models or just have them separated? Sounds logical to me the second way for many reasons but my boss and the client want to navigate and have all in one.

Is it possible to import/export the sheets from one to other file?

Am I missing something?

Many thanks

 Hi there,

Yeah, this is a tricky subject.  It really depends on the functionality you need.  You can have all of the sheets in one project file, while still having each model linked, but this is a painful process, as all of your sheet work has to happen in one file, while some of your model work happens in the linked files.

We did a project where this was the case.  Prior to Revit 2011 and being able to Tag SOME items across links, all of the model related annotation had to exist in the linked file, and you have to set up the host file (sheet file) with "linked views" to get the annotation to show up and put it on a sheet.  You are also duplicating view creation, because essentially, the view you want has to exist in both the linked file and the host file.

If you could swing it, I would suggest either having all the disciplines in one model (which most people ARE NOT currently doing), or just having each discipline create their own sheets in their respective files.

Please let me know if this makes sense, or if I need to elaborate more.

I would like to add that we recently did a small project in Revit where we combined all the models.  It was very successful but it was small and the models loaded fairly fast.  Having all the sheets in one project where everyone could see all the sheets was great.  Also it allowed us to combine some views on to another discipline sheet saving sheets.  This is being pointed to as the project that we have made the most money on using Revit.

TL, this is really great information.  I think that's the big deal, the SIZE of the project.  In our case, we had a HUGE project...my arch files alone totaled to be like 500 MBs...total of 5 separate files, 4 buildings, and a site file.  Plus, this was started in Revit 2009, before 64 bit had come out for Revit, and in 2010 and especially 2011, they have made things much faster.

If the project is small enough, I would definitely agree that combining the models could be a very productive option.

It makes sense to me to create each sheet in the proper file, if not, how to setup a duct or pipe color scheme in rac? There is not tool for that. Or maybe do everything in MEP?

although everything is in the same file, your MEP guys can still open the file in Revit MEP, and the same file can be opened in Revit Architecture or Revit Structure.  It's really just a matter of what tools Autodesk has made available to you in different flavors of Revit...make sense?

You’re right; we have to activate worksets and it can be done but I still think that it is not worth the extra work. Like you said, one group has to do some things in both files.

Thanks again.
