Rendering Workflow Question

Hello all

I am a new Revit user in an architectural design firm. I am primarily on the rendering side of things, and I'm wondering if someone could refer me to the recommended best practice for Revit Rendering, i.e. exporting to 3ds max and then using a renderer such as vray etc, or if there is an external renderer that directly supports Revit.

We have about a dozen machines running Revit 2011, and we are interested in finding software that will allow small network rendering off-hours without necessarily licensing 3ds max on more than one machine. I would lso like to be able to take advantage of some of the more comprehensive material libraries and lighting capabilities that exist outside of Revit.

Any and all direction is appreciated! Thanks!

I usually export to FBX and then do a file link in 3DS Max to the FBX file with the preset "Autodesk Revit FBX - Combine By Revit Material" option seleceted.  I can then assign materials in MAX and render away!

Re: Rendering Workflow Question

We have a workflow at my office that currently works like this (they use Sketchup and 3dsmax).

1)  Modeling done in sketch-up

2)  Materials assigned in Sketch-up.  Exported to 3d DWG and imported into max for use with Mental Ray or Vray.

We have backburner client installed on all the machines in the office, and I know not all the machines have 3ds Max installed, although some do.  They use the network as a render farm off hours, so it can be done.

For the Revit workflow, I would suggest export to FBX as well.  It will send all your materials, etc. and there shouldn't be a ton of rework in 3ds max, depending on how much detail you modeled in Revit and what you need in the final render.

Fyi...there are also batch render tools for Revit out there, one of which I posted in this forum.  I'm not sure if the one I have posted will work with Revit 2011 or not, but if not, I'll see if I can find an updated version and post it to the link.

Always glad to help.

J

Hi

We use Sketchup with the SU Podium plug in and get some pretty decent renderings. However, it can take up to 4 days to render (on a very high spec PC) and effectively makes that PC redundant for a period of time. We also have one guy who uses Rhino and Photoshop

I'd like to get some feedback from everyone on the subject of rendering. I do not produce renders (it is done elsewhere in our office) and am wondering why no one seems to use REVIT to render. Is this simply because it just can't produce renders to the standard of 3DMax, Rhino, etc?

Also...I was at a CAD MAnager's Forum last week and they talked about 'rendering in the cloud'. We have not trialled this yet, but it looks very interesting. Basically you can render off site and you are able to carry on working on your own PC.

Hope this is of some interest,
