Feedback required on Autodesk's Project Vasari

Hi

I am after some feedback on Autodesk's Project Vasari

Has anyone downloaded and had a good look at it. It was "sold" to me at a CAD forum as Autodesk's version of Skecthup with extra energy efficiency tools. I have spent 5 minutes having a brief look. It seems to be a cut down version of REVIT with just conceptual modelling tools presumably to encourage users to use REVIT at conceptual stage instead of Sketchup.

Any views?

Cheers, Eldon

 Hey Eldon,

I took a quick look at this.  I think, very promising, but remember it is a "technology preview" so it has a long way to go (IMHO).

It is, at this point, a cut down version of Revit.  They have done a few things, in my understanding, to the back end code for the conceptual modeling, and simplified the interface (obviously), because many complaints of sketchup users is that the Revit interface is too cumbersome for design.

I think, it's really more of a formality for those users that aren't already Revit users...somewhat of a stepping stone to get them from Sketchup to Revit, which I think is needed.  The Factory has quite a few more major issues to address, such as modeling in perspective, before they are going to get most designers to port over, but I think the effects down the road of the model being started in Vassari, and essentially ported right into Revit has a huge impact of time and cost of a project, compared to doing all the modeling and design in Sketchup and the redoing all of the modeling in Revit.

What we are doing right now is designing in Sketchup with the hopes of doing our SD issue in Revit, so more or less a concurrent Revit/Sketchup effort.  Revit is really for plans and elevations at this time, and once the design is basically complete, we take the Revit model to the next level and really start getting into the 3D nity-grity of getting the model ready for CDs.

Hope this helps.

Very helpful feedback (as always) thanks.

We have the same issue, where the early Sketchup and Revit models are created almost in tandem. It is really handy having the Skecthup model to work to, but it seems a little wasteful to create both models. We are trying to encourage initial design work to be done in Revit, but as you state, it just isn't as flexible as Sketchup.

Maybe it is too much to expect an all encomapsing software at this stage from Autodesk. If they could just incorporate the ease of Skecthup and the ability of StudioMax , we'd have it all :-)

Cheers, Eldon
