Swapping 768 Lighting Fixtures in Revit MEP 2010 Takes 20 Minutes - Is this Normal?

We're working on a lighting plan for a multi-floor building. The background is in a linked rvt file. We need to swap out all the lighting for a given floor. This process is taking 20+ minutes in Revit 2010 MEP. Perhaps we're taking the wrong approach. Should we expect that this process take this long?

Our hardware configuration is:

i5 chip

8GB RAM

7200rpm SATA drive

512MB on an nVidia GT310 card

Thanks for your help.

If it's that many lights, I wouldn't be surprised.  I'm not an MEP guy, although I have dealt with it a little and understand that it calculates all sorts of things for you.

My guess is, it's taking so long, because it is having to go through and recalculate all your circuits, etc.  And if it's that many lights, it could take a while.  20 minutes does seem like longer than I would think it should take though.

One thing I would do, is make sure you have all your open views closed, except for one you need to swap them out.  Sounds like you have plenty of RAM, but you would also unload the background file temporarily, to free up some RAM.

What's the frequency of the core i5 chip?  2.6 ghz...lower...higher?  I would expect a 3ghz chip with 8gb of RAM to do it faster than 20 minutes, but again, I'm not a Revit MEP regular user, so I'm not for sure.  I know just thinking about some times I have upgraded large models from one version of Revit to another, it has taken 20 to 30 minutes and completed sucessfully.  So I think it's entirely possilbe that a mass swap out of that many lights could take a while.

Hope this helps.  Let us know what you figure out.

in my experience, yes, its takes that long in optimal options.

When we are rendering with a lot of lightning fixtures we put all the fixtures in one design option.

In the 3D view we put the lightning fixtures which are relevant fot that view in a seperate option so we don't have to render all the luightning fixtures.

this saves a lot of rendering time !

Greetings, Marien

Thank you all for your insights. Here's what we're perplexed about. If we try to swap out all 768 fixtures at once, Revit takes 20 minutes. But, if we break out the task in 6 pieces of 120 fixtures, then each section takes about 30 seconds. So, in pieces, the total task takes about 3-4 minutes. 20 minutes vs. 4 minutes. We're wondering if we're doing something wrong.

We can work in pieces, but it's a bit more tedious and prone to human errors.

Thanks again for all your help.

With 8 GB of RAM, I assume you are running 64-bit Operating System AND 64-bit Revit??

Only thing that I can think is that maybe you are running out of RAM in the process of changing them all out at the same time.  Stuff like this is so prone to so many variables, but I am glad you were at least able to break up the process and save some time, even though it's a pain and more prone to human error.
