Section - Random Far Clip Offset??

I was wondering if anyone knew how to, or if it's even possible to some how dissalow Revit from "estimating" the offset distance when generating a section.

Current Steps:

1. Select the Section (SE) button under the quick access toolbar; or View tab, Create panel, Section button.

2. Click to enter the section start point.

3. Click to enter segment end point.

4. Go to view.

The Issue:

The Properties panel for the Section under Extents you will see Far Clip Offset and this number appears to be random. When I generate the Section, at step number 3, I begin to notice a sudden decrease in computer response because Revit is trying to generate the section well before I click for the Section's Segment End Point. So when I move the mouse it begins to lock up on me momentarily. Please see attached example, program used CamStudio from RenderSoft (http://camstudio.org/). In the example I show the Far Clip Offset shows to be about 12'-7", but sometimes this can go all the way to 150'-0" and beyond. Is there any way we can default this value to something like 5'-0"? Has anyone noticed this or am I the only one?

Firstly, no I am not aware of away to set it as a default.

Second, did you have any other open views when you did this?  Sometimes, closing all your open views besides the one you are drawing the section tag in, can greatly decrease the amount of regens Revit tries to do when you are trying to add a view.

Third, I watched your video, and for a big model (not sure how big yours is), the lag you show isn't that bad (in my experience).

I think the main thing that would help is closing the other views you might have open.  I'd try that and see if it seems "snappier".

Always glad to help.

Thanks for the reply Muser,

Yes all other views have been closed and the model is approaching 150 MB when compressed. The example shown was not that bad, it's when the offset extends beyond 100ft, and when I am at the middle of the building when it gets real slow. I may just be too picky, but I'll continue to review as I am using a template for the sections generated.

I have figured it out! Because I am using a default template for the sections generated; it, Revit, is trying to apply the template constantly as I move my mouse. So if you'd like performance over having to continuously apply a view template to the sections generated do not use the "Apply automatically to new views of the same type" toggle that appears within the Apply View Template window.

Elliot, I am glad you figured this out.  This is useful information for the whole community!

On another note, 150 mb Revit file is getting on the large size...by no means is it too big, but I would begin to expect things to start feeling slow in files that big.

Happy Reviting!

Yes it is, and I've read in the AUGI forms somewhere that 200mb is the absolute maximum.

Other tips I've figured out:
1. When linking in food service and or interiors, be sure to place within a separate workset and close the workset if not in use and before syncing to central if you are using them for coordination purposes (open them when printing if necessary). This decreases the amount of save time and regeneration.

2. When modeling be sure to have your Visual Style at Wireframe and not Hidden, Shaded, etc. If you have it on anything but Wireframe, as you pan around Revit will regenerate all the trimming. (again revert back to your standard when printing)

3. Not really a tip but I'd like to test it out. On a massive project, like the one I am working on, I’m thinking of separating the zones of a project into worksets and open them as necessary. We all know that Revit, even in 2011 the systems cannot really connect from one model onto another (not smart enough?). So, right now I have a workset for each discipline and the discipline's equipment. i.e.: Electrical - Equipment, Electrical - Lighting, Electrical - Power, etc. So what I'd do is like; Electrical (TWR) - Equipment, Electrical (TWR) - Lighting, Electrical (TWR) - Power, Electrical (POD) - Equipment, Electircal (POD) - Lighting, etc. Please let me know if you've done something similar and if you’ve noticed any problems or loss in performance.

I have more but cannot think of them right now.
