Need help computer specs for a desktop

Hello everybody,

I am new to this forum and here is my first post. I am looking forward to a career in architecture and will soon be starting online courses in Revit, AutoCADD and also 3DstudioMax. I need help in buying the right desktop which will get me through the coursework and last a couple of years. I was looking at Dell XPS-9100 premium model. Is this a dood one to buy? I am open to any other suggestions.

Video Card - 1024 (MB) ATI HD5870 RadeonTM

Optical Drive- Blu-ray Combo Drive (8X BD-R, DVD+/-RW) with DVD+R double layer write capability

That should work very well, in fact I would say that it approaches overkill. You can check the video card compatibility on the revit site. The HD videocard is not really necessary but it will definitely give you room for any future applications. Another thing to consider is if that Dell is 64 bit or not, I would recommend going 64 bit. Ever thought about building your own system?

Thank you for your input. I will look it into it and see if Dell is 64 bit. I wouldn't know where to start to build my own computer. What are the pros for building your own computer?

Thanks again,

Y

is, generally, much cheaper.  OVERCLOCKING!  And now a days, everything is pretty plug and go, so it's not that hard.

Cons: no system warranty..must rely on manufacturer warranty of the parts.  Usually limited warranty.

The Dell is 64 bit otherwise it wouldn't support  more than 4Gb of ram

The specs you have up there says

"Operating System - Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

Memory -12GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz "

My only concern is it's being Home Premium. Try and get one with

Windows® 7 Professional 64-Bit. It supports more software in addition to

 being much more secure.

Like superJMuser said it's cheaper to build yours if you are willing to forego

the manufacturer's warranty and are comfortable enough trouble shooting

things yourself.

Thank you superJMuser, dedalus and Tok. Your input was helped me make my decision. I have decided to go with dell, for the following reasons:

1) I looked into building one myself, I am not confident  doing so.

2) I got one priced to have it built by a local business, they quoted me $200 > dell xps

3) ofcourse the warranty.

The dell desktop I selected comes with 1024 (MB) ATI HD5870 Radeon video card. Instead if I opted for 1024 (MB) ATI HD5670 Radeon, I would save myself another $200.

As dedalus suggested I checked the revit site for compatibility but both of them are not listed. I wanted to find out if anybody else has used it before and in my case will the HD5670 work. What is the difference b/n the two?

Thank you,

Y
