Callout Drawings on Sheets from a Linked Revit File

I currently have a Revit file (let's call it "X") linked into another Revit file (let's call it "Main").  X has it's own set of sheets and I can get them to show up in the index when I link X into Main, but the actual sheets don't come in.  I don't need to edit these sheet in the main file so it's fine, but how can I add callouts or annotations to the overall floor plan in the Main file, and have them reference views from the X sheets?

That is not currently possible in Revit.  What you have to do (which sucks either way) is one of two things:

1) Annotate everything in the Main file accross the linked file and put your tags and callouts live in the "Main" file.

2) Recreate all of your tags, views and sheets in the main file, and set your linked file in your VG overrides to be by linked view.  You can then select the fully annotated view from the X file in the Main file show the annotation you have already done (I assume) in file "X" will show through in the Main file.

Either way, if you proceeded this route and have already set everything up in two separate files, you have a lot of work to do.

Depending on your situation, what I might do is just let the Drawing list be dumb for this project.  The only other challenge you would have is if you have using common details between the files, and also making sure you don't have duplicate sheets details between the two files...

Hope this clarifies...sorry for the not so good news for your situation.

We have a couple of projects in this situation; they are using the dummy view approach (recreate the sheets/details that only contain the correct sheet number, detail number, view name, ect from X in the main file). Whenever a X sheet changes, the main file has to be manually updated.

The better approach is to have all the sheets exist in X, link in the main model (assume building model) and place all your live callouts as needed.

Glad I found this post, but I hope there is something that will make this easier in the next Revit version.

Your suggestion works for using the "linked view", but I still cannot see callouts, which will make this workaround not an option

What I've done is replicate the call out or section symbol - creating a "dumb" annotation symbol. This I use like an old CAD symbol - I edit the text to point to the detail/ sheet. It's not linked, but it gets the job done.

 Sometimes that is nessesary :)

Revit is getting there, I just wish it was like Revit 2013 Ultimate Suite from the beginning :(

There are major players out there that will push Adesk next years though, I think Revit will be developed faster or die.

New Gen´s of users are multitaskers, and do not want to be limited.

Infrastructure Modeler is a good sign, it´s new tunes, and I love it for it´s use.

If it had proper dimtools/section/layout/printing it would be a perfect support for Revit´s sadly lacking sitetools.

If only I could get the roads/curbs/intersections to import with hidden tris, it´s infact ok as an dwg import.

Terrain is perfect(imported as a topo), and so is the cutouts/pads, but the native Revit pads if use em don´t slope :(

Roads from Im are lightweight, but triangulated, so it´s soo little that lacks aggr, a test in 2013 looks even better.

 It works :)

Same as my civil stuff in Revit, prettier then in Civil3d ha ha.

I love/hate workarounds.
