Check out the source link above to see the original post...this is really great information, and I'm glad to see this was fixed in Revit 2012. If you are still on Revit 2011, there is 2 options for a workaround down at the bottom.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let’s look at the following scenario for Revit 2011:
• Host Project
• Linked Project
• View Filter added with a fill pattern for fire rated walls
The walls in the host project display the pattern as expected. But you notice the walls in the linked project do not display the filter. The wall Type Property > Fire Rating contains data in both the host and linked project walls.

Revit 2011 introduced the ability to apply view filters across linked files. However there is a limitation when it comes to fill patterns; Revit attempts to match the element id from the fill pattern in the host project to the fill pattern in the linked project.
Even if the same-name pattern exists in both projects, unless both projects were created from the same template which contained the fill pattern [meaning the fill pattern wasn’t created later on in the project] the element id’s will vary. When you create a new fill pattern, a unique element id is assigned to that pattern. Because of the different element id’s Revit will be unable to match the fill patterns across projects; so the linked project will not display the fill pattern as the host elements do.
Revit 2012 improves this functionality; simply by doing nothing but upgrading a project that falls under this scenario, the fill patterns will appear for both the host and linked project elements.

There are 2 approaches to take for Revit 2011:
1. Apply Filter in Link and Set the Linked Project to By Linked View
Add the same view filter in the linked project view. Then in the host project, set the link to By Linked View which should display the filter and corresponding fill pattern.
Video Example
2. Rename and Edit a Default Unused Fill Pattern
If the projects were created from the same template, in the host project locate an unused existing fill pattern under Manage > Additional Settings > Fill Patterns. Edit the pattern > Custom > Import the .pat file used for the fire rating. Name accordingly > OK.
Repeat this process for each linked project, ensuring to edit and modify the same existing fill pattern [ex. rename Wood2 to 1-HOUR and import the custom pattern].
This will ensure the element id’s match, and the patterns should be displayed through the linked project.

In all honesty, Revit 2011 users are still out of luck, at least your MEP users.
The reason is because the By Linked View approach (how do I put this gently?) sucks for MEP. By Linked View hoses the use of View Templates and results in a nightmare trying to manage views especially when a model has multiple disciplines. Not to mention the loss of control over what is visible in the background (shudder).
And naturally, the MEP project will never be based on the same template as the architectural model.
It's a good thing everyone is agreeing to upgrade their current projects to 2012. Right?! Everyone is agreeing to that, correct? _______________ R. Robert Bell |

Below is a list of things to be aware of when browsing through the Revitinfo.com Forum:
1) As a registered user at Revitinfo, you automatically are signed up to recieve emails any time a new post or reply to existing post is made. You can change this setting while logged in under your User Profile by clicking on your user name at the top right of any page, next to the Date (or by clicking on the My Profile Button on any Forum Page). Once you get here, click on the "Edit Profile" link below your Quick Profile Information. Finally, select "Manage Profile" and scroll down the the very bottom to change your forum email subscription Settings.
2) Each Entry must have an assigned Category and EntryType. Not all categories have subcategories, but if the category you pick has subcategories, please pick the most appropriate for your entry.
3) Only registered, logged-in users have the privledges to create posts, reply to posts, and view attachments of posts. Registration is free, and like any other forum, is our way of increasing forum functionality and security.
4) As a registered user, you will also have the ability to subscribe to threads individually, rate them, and view a list of your posts. You can also edit posts that you have made. Also, as a registered user at Revitinfo, you automatically are signed up to recieve emails any time a new post or reply to existing post is made. You can change this setting while logged in uder your User Profile by clicking on your user name at the top right of any page, next to the Date. 5) Soon, there will be a way for users to request other categories/SubCategories via a request form. Currently, for our system to work the way it has been designed, the category and subcategories as well as EntryTypes must remain a standard for all users of the site, in order to make searching/browsing information faster and easier.
