Wall Sections & Details

I'm working on some wall sections and have a question -

In my overall wall section I have to go through and add my detail components - masonry, sheathing etc.  When I make & go to my detail view none of my detail compents make it into the detail view, meaning they need to be added again.  Is there a way to have elements from a section show up in the detail view?

the only way I am aware is a literal copy and paste, which stinks.

The way I have been handling it is grouping parts of the overall wall section together (detail groups), and then copying those detail groups into the enlarged detail

doing this allows me to change either the wall section or detail, and be sure those same things come across in all places.

Plus, if you set it up right, there's a good chance you can reuse parts of your detail groups in other wall sections and details.

Hope this helps.

Good advice, thats the only way I've found to do it too.....

Remember to pin your detail componets to your section views.

Hey Roy, I have never pinned mine...what advantages have you noticed to pinning them?

If they are pinned then they move with the walls, otherwise they are missaligned in your section view after any change to wall locations.

You can also pin the roof or ceiling items so they move with any change to heights.

hmm...interesting...I'll have to test this.  So you are saying if I detail over a wall, group and actually use the "Pin" tool (not locked dims or align and lock), the detail group will actually move with the walls if I move the wall?  What happens if you move the section tag (perpindicular to the wall)?

I also pin  imported image or cad file drawings, so they dont move as I encircle other items that I want highlight to hide or move.

The items will stay pinned to the wall/roof, etc..section view, so if moving the section looses the view of that wall/roof, you will need to delete or hide the now floating detail componets. Not perfect, but its easier than moving these items when the wall/roof moves

it sounds to me like he is actually referring to using the "pin" tool.

Hey Roy,

I too used to pin my revit and cad links, but when the links became large and it was accidentally selected it tended to lag my computer. So instead of pinning my links i now place them under a separate design option. That way its still visible yet i cant select it. Let me know if that helped anyone. (works for copy/monitored grids too! not so with spaces but anything helps.)

Thanks,

Thanks Elliot,

Thats great advice...! I will definetly try" that.

I appologize for using the term" Pinned loosely.

The detail componets would be align & lock, the import images would be the pin command that shows up under the modify tab. It's amazing what you canuse the pin command for, even short term uses.

I always welcome advice and always learn something new.

Thanks,

Roy

Just in case - are you aware of the Pres & Drag option at the bottom right of the interface - which allows dragging an element without  first selecting it?  That's the first thing I de-select when I help anyone with Revit.

That was a great tip....I use the press & drag to move things, so I never explored unchecking the box....thanks...!

I am now reformed....! (or is that educated?)....
