I would make sure you're using the same version of Revit on the project.  Sounds like a compatibility issue.

In order to link you will needd to be in a plan view.

Got it to work Thanks everyone!

Now heres my biggest problem, I'm designing the electrical for a parking structure and when i place my lighting fixtures some are floating and others are "slicing" through the floors because of all the slopes.

At first when i inserted a fixture onto "the first floor" my fixture was at the floor vs the "ceiling" so since a parking structure has no RCP i added a Reference line and placed all my lighting fixtures but then later realized they were  floating and others were "slicing" through the floors. I was told this is due to not having the model Linked but now that i linked it im still having the problem. What do you recommend?

Thanks!

Light fixtures, if I remember correctly, are host based, so they need a ceiling (or refernce plane) to be placed correctly.  Also you should investigate the family - where is it hosted from?  The elevation you input might be referenced off the floor level OR off the ceiling.

And lastly, ceiling extents are the opposite of flloor plans, (you are looking up from the cut plane) so I'd recommend a tutorial on RCP's in Revit:

With regard to the fixtures slicing through the floor and lets say you wanted it at the bottom of the slab I did two things. Use the align tool or Use a negative offset value. Allot of the time it might not be best practice, but if it works why not. Later when you have time or a quite moment, go look at tutorials or frequent You-Tube.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

So I added a reference plane onto the slab and it seems to work when I looking through a north section but when looking from west it shows that its slicing through the slab. I figured i can add reference plans to each location of the fixture but I have over 100 lights in this building and the fact that the more refernce planes the slower the model is.

How do I find out where my family is hosted?

As far as negative offset, I remember having to do that in school but for some reason with this fixture i cant seem to find that option in my properites box.

And the align tool, I think when I tried that I got some random error and the fixture wouldnt show on my lighting floor plan....

Any Advice?

Thanks

You can set the offset by selecting the light fixture and editing the family. Make a duplicate copy before editing and re-name your modified fixture, ie; offset-light fixt01, or whatever name that makes it easy to recognize.

You can move the light fixture down the required amount in the family file while editing and if you understand how to assign a parameter you can add a dimension and make it a parameter (call it offset)....save and load into project.

The best way to have the light fixtures follow a sloping structure thats not a ceiling is to create a refrence plane that follows the slope.

If your not sure how to do that, a down and dirty workaround would be to create a thin ceiling, say 1/2' out of concrete, (make sure your using the ceiling command so the light fixtures will attach). set it to the same level as the floor minus the offset you desire, and make sure you added the same slope as your floor. Then you will merely need to hide the ceiling in any visible views, using the "eh" command. This is easier if you open all the views it shows in, tile the views, click on the ceiling in one view and hit "sa" for select all and hit "eh" to hide .

Be sure to check in the views to verify that the offset is adequate, if not it's easy to click on the ceiling and add more +/-0'-0" offset

Hope this helps

Be aware that the lighting fixture family may have the Always Vertical parameter set which can also lead to this behavior.
