I use this technique when I array some elements vertically - eg. when I create a bank of shelves I create the top shelf in a plan view. It is created at the certain height above the level I am currently working in. Then I go to a temporary section view, dissociate my shelf from my working level, make a vertical array, than associate my top shelf back to its original workplane. In that manner the whole "composite" family stays attached to the workplane and moves with it when necessary.
